This is my first story in quite awhile, I'll add more chapters as I go!
Chapter 1: Of Traitors and Blood
“You ignorant fool! What have you done!?” a female Charr hissed, taking a swing with a cooking knife. It was caught by an old paw, riddled with scars. “How dare you bring shame upon my offspring!”
“Don’t you mean, our offspring, my fairest?” a harsh chuckle reverberated in the dark. The old Charr promptly swept the female’s feet from under her, causing her to go headfirst onto a chair.
“Poor thing, is the poison that quick? Or are you just that dull?” a clawed foot bit into her torso, causing her to make an ungodly painful sound. Blood soon spat from her mouth as she coughed uncontrollably. The male growled deep in his chest, proud he could make her suffer. Little mews came from the backpack he had on, making the female’s ears perk up as she soon turned, leaping at her attacker.
“To think I called you Soul Mate!” Her claws met his flesh, making three deep gashes on his chin and neck. Her teeth also sank into his left out-stretched hand, her jaw gripping down as he reared back in pain.
“Stupid human-lover!” He punched her once, hard enough to break the left side of her snout. “I told you no good would come from Charr and Humans getting along!”
He finally pried her off with his foot, but not before she had grabbed the straps on his pack. Three little cubs went spilling out everywhere. Their cubs, the ones they had made together. She scrambled to get them, but only managed to grab two. She coddled them close to her, twisting onto her haunches as the male Charr jumbled with his spilled goods.
“Traitor!” she hissed again at him, staggering to her feet and sprinting out of the small home.
“Raaargh!” the big male roared, pounding the counter with his hands. His plan had gone awry, what was he to do now? Before he could think much on it, a small mewing sound came from under a rusty metal bucket. He quickly tossed the bucket aside and grabbed the bluish hued cub, and stole into the night. It was only moments later that a couple of guards arrived, and a distraught female Charr behind them. The searched for hours around the city, but couldn’t find a trace of either Charr.
“Blue… Where has he taken you?” she whispered, cuddling her two other cubs.
------------
Days went by. He had tried to act natural. However, it was hard to hide on the run with a little mewing cub in your new pack. He did what he could to feed it, but Dolyak milk could only get one so far before they missed their mother’s milk. He couldn’t go back now; the Black Citadel would be up in arms about a cubnapping! Snarling to himself, he took a rest himself at a farm right outside of the human city. He brought out an old piece of dried meat to chew on while contemplating.
Divinity’s Reach would be a lovely place to leave him, but no human in their right mind would raise a cub in the city. Even in the gutters the little thing would be left to fend for itself. No, death was not an option for his cub. But he couldn’t take the poor thing before the counsel, no, not yet. It had to grow into a strong gullible young adult Charr first. Pondering a bit more, he noticed a barn nearby.
“Oh ho, maybe those insignificant human farmers are good for something after all!” he laughed, shoving the rest of the meat into his mouth before bounding out to the farthest reaches of the human farms.
One small house, set upon a small hill, next to a lush forest, a bit off from a stream. It was perfect, and he only counted about three to four humans inhabiting it. They owned a bit of land, nothing too big, but also not too small as some they’d come across. The woods would also house wild animals; perfect to hone one’s hunting skills.
“I’ll slip by in the night, and you’ll have a new home.” He patted Blue on the head, noticing the tiny infant was already fast asleep. Ideas had turned into plans, plans had turned into reality, and reality now twisted into murky ambitions. “Once you grow up, no one will doubt the Flame Legion! We shall rule both the Legion and Tyria together my son.”
----------
While waiting for dusk, the Charr had rummaged around an old storage building the humans had on the edge of their property. Being disused for so long, the whole thing looked to collapse soon. Inside were old baskets, buckets, tools, harnesses, and other random farming bits. He had found one basket good enough to hold the cub. Stuffing it with some fresh hay he then set tiny Blue down in it. He then wrapped the babe in a linen piece he’d bought from an old lady while on the travel. She’d thought him just a traveling father, and traded him the cloth for a chance to hold a newborn Charr. Not many humans ever saw the creatures under adulthood. If they had before the Treaty, they would’ve been hunted down.
Getting back to the task at hand, the old Charr fumbled through his pack again. Producing a scroll and some ink, he set to write a note for the child. Pondering for a minute on what to write, he growled. He wanted to get Blue inside that home before dawn broke. Scribbling something on the scroll, he rolled it up and tied it to the side of the basket. Blue was snuggled in the new linen, staring up at his father with bright wide eyes. Feeling a sense of love and pride, the old Charr bent down, nuzzling his boy. Now prepared, he quietly made his way to the doorstep
Lucky for him they had no dogs guarding the place. He crept up to the door, careful not to step on any leaves or branches. He also made sure not to startle their dolyaks, those dumb animals always seemed to panic at the sight of anything over the size of a mouse! He tried peeking into the window, but the curtains were already closed. Grumbling, he lay Blue at the bottom of the door.
“Goodbye my boy, see you soon.” He took a deep breath, and then frantically knocked on their door as if he were in trouble. Quickly he jumped off the porch, running into the woods, and then turned to see the results. A couple of lanterns flickered in the distance, telling him that they’d found him. A sword also shimmered next to them, and he tensed for a moment. But it was quickly put away when they saw it was merely a Charr cub left alone. Once they had disappeared inside, he also disappeared…
